IRobot's 1KA Seaglider, in collaboration with Duke University, took its first dip on Monday at AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2011. The buoyancy-driven UUV carries sensors for oceanic research on salinity, temperature and depth, says iRobot director of maritime systems applications Paco Santana. A new sensor on the system, called DMON, is an acoustic sensor that communicates with marine life.

"They were testing it to find any mammals in the water," Santana says.
