Colombia-based Avianca and US Airways have applied to the US Department of Transportation to codeshare on flights between Colombia and the USA, as well as to third-country points beyond both countries.

Avianca, which has merged with Latin American carrier Taca, joined the Star Alliance earlier this year, of which US Airways is a member.

US Airways has requested to display Avianca's AV code on 12 domestic routes it operates to and from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, New York and Orlando. Avianca requested to display US Airways' code on nine routes it operates to Colombia from the four US cities.

The two airlines requested for expedited approval of the application and aims to begin codesharing as early as 24 October.
