BAA UK airports traffic up 1% in September

BAA recorded a 1% growth in passenger numbers at its UK airports in September, to 10.1 million.

Aircraft movements remained flat at 81,600. The overall freight tonnage declined 3.7% to 139,000t, said BAA.

Passenger numbers at London airports grew 0.2% to 8 million with a 1.4% rise in Heathrow and 4% decline at Stansted.

Aircraft movements at the London airports dropped 0.1% to 53,000, up 1.3% at Heathrow but down 4.6% at Stansted.

At Southampton Airport, passenger numbers grew 0.7% to 176,000. Aircraft movements declined 4% to 3,750 while cargo traffic dropped 37.2% to 14t, said the airport operator.

BAA's Scottish airports reported a 4.3% rise in passenger numbers to 1.9 million. Aircraft movements increased 1.1% to 24,800 while cargo traffic declined 2.3% to 2,460t.

Passenger numbers at Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen grew 3.2%, 3% and 11.3%, respectively. Air transport movements at Glasgow Airport declined 2.9% but increased 0.6% and 4.9% at Edinburgh and Aberdeen, respectively.

On the cargo front at the Scottish airports, freight tonnage declined 19.5% and 1.9% at Glasgow and Edinburgh airports, but grew 9.2% at Aberdeen Airport.
