Bahrain airport's operator has kicked off a BD30 million ($80 million) wave of renovation projects with a BD1.2 million contract to replace the facility's seven air bridges.

The glass-sided and air-conditioned walkways are to be designed and built by CIMC TIANDA Airport Support of Shenzhen.

Airport chief executive Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah says this “first wave” of Bahraini government-funded renovation would include improved firefighting capability, with the purchase of two vehicles, improved flooring in part of the airport and the upgrading of the airport radio system to digital technology.

By the end of 2015, he adds, the airport will have signed contracts worth BD80 million for further investment plans, including aircraft maintenance capabilities.
