Bangalore International Airport plans to almost double the size of its passenger terminal building to cater to increased traffic over the next five years.
The 72,000 sq m terminal will be expanded to 134,000 sq m at a cost of 10 billion rupees ($216.2 million), says the airport.
It expects to handle 17 million passengers a year in 2015, up from 10.6 million currently.
"The expansion is scheduled to be completed in 18 months from the commencement of its construction," says the airport, which unveiled the terminal's design yesterday.
After the expansion, the terminal will have 23 boarding gates, up from 12 currently. The number of check-in counters will also increase to 83 from 53, says the airport.
