Boeing and Hawai'i BioEnergy, a consortium of large Hawaiian landowners formed to develop local renewable bioenergy projects, are to jointly investigate the production of sustainable jet fuel in Hawaii.

Only plant sources that do not distort the global food chain, compete with fresh or crop water resources, or lead to unintended land use changes are being considered. The initiative is looking at crops such as sorghum or eucalyptus that can be grown on the islands.

Hawai'i BioEnergy is a supplier of renewable energy to Hawaiian electricity generators and describes itself as "well-positioned to co-lead the local aviation biofuel effort".
