Mexicana chief Manuel Borja believes the carrier's decision to join the Oneworld Alliance should drive significant revenue gains compared with its time as a member of the Star grouping.
Borja during a ceremony on 9 November marking Mexicana's official entry into Oneworld commented that Mexicana was "once part of another alliance", but the carrier eventually realised "we were not getting the desired result". Mexicana was a member of Star from 2000 to 2004.
Subsequent to Mexicana's exit from Star the Mexican flag carrier forged bilateral agreements with Oneworld carriers American and Iberia. Once those agreements were in place Borja explains Mexicana "enjoyed better revenues".
Borja says part of the reason Mexicana's membership in Star became undesirable was a pullback by United Airlines in Mexico to focus on other markets such as Asia. After the bilaterals with the Oneworld members were in place, an invitation was extended to Mexicana to join the group. It remains to be seen if Mexicana has tweaks to its network planned now that is officially a full member of the Oneworld grouping. Its subsidiaries Click and Link have joined as affiliate members.
Currently both Iberia, who sponsored Mexicana's membership into Oneworld, and Mexicana both operate flights from Mexico City to Madrid. The carriers have codesharing arrangements on certain flights from each of their respective hubs. Borja when queried about any plans between Iberia and Mexicana to consolidate the Mexico-Madrid operations said the companies would do what is best for both airlines. Schedules in the Innovata database show Iberia offers 10 weekly flights between Madrid and Mexico while Mexicana offers seven.
Mexicana launched its first-ever transatlantic flights to Madrid and London Gatwick earlier this year along with long-haul service to Sao Paulo.
