Brazilian carrier TAM has introduced Boeing MD-11 tri-jets for the first time, as an interim before its Boeing 777-300ERs arrive, bringing its fleet to nearly 100 aircraft.

The first MD-11, an ex-Varig jet configured with 279 seats in three classes, is being deployed on the Paris route which is served from Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

TAM, which now has 98 aircraft, is to acquire another pair of MD-11s within the first half of this year. They will be used to operate a new route to Milan from 30 March.

Four Boeing 777-300ERs, ordered towards the end of last year along with options on four more, are scheduled to arrive in 2008. Prior to the MD-11 arrival the airline operated Airbus and Fokker aircraft.
