Australian low-cost carrier Virgin Blue's co-founder Brett Godfrey has resigned from its board, severing ties with the airline he helped to form 11 years ago.

The carrier said last year that Godfrey, who was also Virgin Blue's founding CEO, would retire from that position in 2010. He was replaced as CEO by former Qantas Airways executive John Borghetti in May.

Virgin Blue says that his resignation as a director is "consistent with arrangements" that were put in place at the time of his retirement.
