A major rehabilitation of the centre parallel runway - 18C/36C - has begun at Charlotte Douglas International airport, a major hub for US Airways.
The airport states 18C/36C is a 32-year runway and its refurbishment is scheduled to take about 70 days.
During its closure, aircraft typically using the centre runway will use runway 18R/36L, a new parallel runway, for takeoff. That particular runway has been primarily used for arriving aircraft only, the airport explained.
The $26.5 million needed to complete the runway refurbishment is being funded through general airport revenue bonds.
