Chennai International Airport commenced the operation of its new domestic and international terminal building on 10 April.

Air India and Jet Airways were the terminal's first domestic operators, says Airports Authority of India (AAI). Low-cost carriers IndiGo and Go Air will move their operations to the terminal on 11 April.

This raises Chennai airport's total handling capacity to 23 million passengers annually, up from 9 million previously.

AAI values the total cost of expanding and upgrading the airport at Indian rupees (Rs) 20.2 billion ($370 million).
