Chicago O'Hare International airport has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the Boeing 747-8 to operate at the airport.

"The Modification of Standards (MOS) granted to the airport is an important development for the future of Chicago O'Hare's air cargo operations," said the Chicago Department of Aviation.

Cargolux, Atlas Air and Cathay Pacific Airways are among the first carriers that will be taking delivery of the cargo version of the aircraft.

Under a modernisation programme taking place at Chicago O'Hare, a new runway, 10C-28C, is being constructed and will be commissioned in December 2013. The runway will be able to accommodate aircraft design group VI aircraft, which includes the 747-8, said the department.
