The Taiwan carrier was lucky when all 165 people on board escaped safely as one of its Boeing 737-800s was destroyed by fire at Okinawa after landing from Taipei, but chief executive Chao Kuo-shuai fumbled a chance to turn the mishap into a public relations triumph. He did the right thing by flying to Okinawa to apologise to his distressed passengers, but left them underwhelmed by handing each a red envelope containing just $100.
