The chairman of Taiwan's China Airlines (CAL), Philip Wei, has resigned due to personal reasons.

He will be replaced by Chang Chia-juch, the former chairman of China Steel Corp, says Taiwan's transport and communications ministry in an unexpected announcement.

Wei has more than 30 years of experience at CAL, and has served as chairman twice. In October 2007, he stepped down from the chairman post but was appointed again less than a year later to replace Ringo Chao.

Incoming chairman Chang is the vice-chairman of China Development Financial Holding, says Taiwanese media reports. Chang reportedly stepped down from his post at China Steel in June following criticism of changes he made at the company.
