China Eastern Airlines' Sichuan branch has received approval to conduct required navigation performance authorisation required (RNP AR) procedures at Lhasa Gonggar airport.

The carrier conducted a successful RNP AR test flight on 27 February to the airport using an Airbus A319. The flight, which departed from Chengdu, was observed by officials from the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC).

The CAAC has now cleared the carrier's Sichuan branch to commence regular RNP AR operations to Lhasa from 1 April.

RNP AR relies on the global navigation satellite system to provide highly accurate aircraft positioning information. It is usually used for operations into airports surrounded by rough terrain where pilots must fly on precise approach and departure paths.

China Eastern's Sichuan branch operates a fleet of four A320s and two A319s.
