China Southern traffic up 13% in May

China Southern Airlines has reported a 13.1% growth in overall passenger traffic in May.

Domestic RPKs rose 10.2%, regional RPKs grew 18.3% and international RPKs jumped 29.3%, said the Guangzhou-based carrier. Regional traffic refers to that from Hong Kong and Macau.

In real terms, the total number of passengers carried by the SkyTeam airline increased 9.8% to 6.61 million. Domestic passenger numbers grew 9.2% to six million, regional passenger numbers jumped 14.8% to 146,000 and international passenger numbers increased 16.7% to 490,000.

Overall capacity, as measured in ASKs, rose 6.1%. Domestic capacity increased 1.1%, regional capacity rose 15.7% and international capacity grew 33.1%, said China Southern.

The overall passenger load factor increased 4.9 percentage points to 80%. The domestic passenger load factor grew 6.8 percentage points to 82.1%, the regional passenger load factor rose 1.6 percentage points to 76.9%, and the international passenger load factor dipped 2.1 percentage points to 71.6%.

On the cargo front, overall revenue freight tonne kilometres grew 14.3%, said China Southern. The total amount of cargo handled rose 2.3% to 92,000t.
