China plans to buy 218 aircraft this year on growing passenger and cargo demand.

The country expects 700 million passenger trips a year by 2020, according to media reports quoting the Civil Aviation Administration of China's director Li Jiaxiang. This is likely to double by 2030, he adds.

The number of passenger trips in 2009 reached 230 million, while cargo freight volume hit 4.46 million tonnes.

Both passenger and cargo volume is expected to grow by 12% this year, Li is quoted as saying.

China plans to spend 90 billion yuan ($13.2 billion) on 25 airport expansion projects this year, he adds, according to the media reports.
