Chinese carriers have stepped up their safety checks in the wake of the Henan Airlines Embraer 190 crash two days ago.

Airlines have convened meetings to review their safety procedures and the Chinese government has ordered a probe into the 24 August incident, says Chinese state media.

Henan Airlines suspended its operations for the second day running today, and could continue with flight cancellations tomorrow.

An airline official confirms that Henan cancelled all its flights today, and adds that it is not certain if operations will resume tomorrow.

The carrier's general manager Li Qiang has also been sacked, says Chinese state media.

In the incident, the aircraft crashed after it overshot the runway while landing at Yichun Airport in northeastern China. The crash killed 42 of the 96 people on board.
