US lessor GE Commercial Aviation Services (GECAS) has clarified that it was no longer the owner of the Spanair Boeing MD-82 lost at Madrid this week.

GECAS says the aircraft - a 15-year old example with serial number 53148 - was sold to SAS Group in 2006.

The twin-jet was powered by two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-217 engines. It had accumulated over 31,000 flight hours and more than 27,000 cycles.

Formerly operated by Korean Air, the aircraft was transferred to the Spanair fleet nine years ago.
