Delta has tagged on a $3 surcharge on flights from the US to Europe as the Emissions Trading System (ETS) takes effect.

Aviation was included in the EU's ETS from 1 January, and carriers operating to and from the EU are required to participate in the trading system.

While not addressing ETS directly, a Delta spokesman did confirm the additional $3 surcharge implemented over the weekend on tickets sold in the US for flights to Europe.

Star Alliance member Lufthansa has also said it would pass along the price of participating in the ETS to its customers through its existing fuel surcharges.
