Delta Air Lines has inked an agreement to lease a 13,000sqm hangar at Tokyo Narita International airport.
The carrier will use the hangar for the maintenance of its long-haul fleet, including its Boeing 747-400s. The lease starts from 1 October.
Narita says this is the first time it has agreed to lease a hangar to a foreign carrier. It adds that Delta is the largest non-Japanese carrier, in terms of the number of international flights as well as international transfer passengers, at the airport.
FlightMaps Analytics shows that Delta operates services to Narita from nine points in the US, and other points in Asia Pacific. The most popular route in terms of seat capacity is Honolulu-Tokyo, where the carrier provided 16,000 seats in March. This is followed by its services from Atlanta, New York and Los Angeles, with 12,000 seats each last month.
The carrier uses Airbus A330s, 767s, 777 and 747s on its services to Tokyo.
