The US Department of Transportation has approved a codeshare between Delta Air Lines and Gol.

The approval covers flights operated by Delta between Brazil and the USA, within the USA and to third countries beyond the USA, and flights operated by Gol between Brazil and the USA, according to a regulatory filing today.

The Atlanta-based SkyTeam alliance member will place its code on Gol flights between Sao Paulo Guarulhos and Rio de Janeiro Galeao and Santo Domingo, as well as between Santo Domingo and Miami and Orlando. Santo Domingo is the Brazilian carrier's hub for North American operations.

Gol will place its code on Delta flights between Atlanta and Brasilia, Sao Paulo Guarulhos and Rio de Janeiro Galeao, Detroit and Sao Paulo, New York's John F. Kennedy (JFK) and Sao Paulo, Santo Domingo and both Atlanta and JFK, as well as between the US gateways and 41 cities in the USA and Canada.

In November, Delta announced that it would codeshare with Gol on flights between Brasilia, Sao Paulo Guarulhos and Rio de Janeiro Galeao and 30 cities in Brazil and six in Latin America from 8 December.

The US airline invested $100 million in Gol in 2011.
