Düsseldorf airport registered 20.8 million passengers in 2012, up 2.4% against the previous year.

But due to airlines deploying larger aircraft, the number of departures and arrivals fell around 2% to 217,000.

Christian Blume, chief executive of Germany's third largest airport, says that "while many airlines are consolidating their coverage, they still bank on hubs like Düsseldorf".

He adds, however, that due to structural changes by the carriers, "we don't expect the coming year [2013] to be any easier for air traffic".
