Airbus's wing-tip modernisation programme for its A320 family has resulted in initial certification of the sharklet tips for the A321.

The approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency covers the CFM International CFM56-powered version of the twinjet, says the airframer.

Airbus is pursuing similar clearance for other members of the family. It disclosed in May that EASA had approved the sharklet modification for CFM56-equipped A319s, following certification of the A320 at the end of last year.

Images have also emerged of a sharklet-fitted A318, serial number 5545, at Airbus's Finkenwerder plant in Hamburg.
