John Barton will join the board of EasyJet as non-executive chairmain effective 1 May, the low-cost carrier confirms, replacing Sir Mike Rake.

Barton is also chairman of clothing retailer Next as well as Catlin Group, the international insurance underwriters.

"We are extremely pleased to have recruited a new chairman of John Barton's calibre," says David Bennett, chairman of the committee tasked with leading the recruitment process.

"John brings a wealth of PLC board experience and valuable commercial expertise to EasyJet. He has chaired major quoted companies for over 16 years, has sound financial expertise and great understanding of high profile, competitive consumer markets."

Sir Mike announced his intention to step down as EasyJet chairman in January, shortly before the airline was admitted to the FTSE 100.

He also serves as deputy chairman of Barclays and chairman of BT, which effectively necessitated his departure from the airline in order to avoid breaching FTSE index regulations.
