All 11 personnel on board an Ilyushin Il-76 freighter are feared dead after it crashed into Lake Victoria shortly after take-off from Entebbe International Airport in Uganda.

The aircraft had taken off at approximately 05:14, writes Michael Wakabi in Kampala.

Uganda's civil aviation authority says the aircraft, en route to Mogadishu in war-torn Somalia with four crew and seven passengers, went down aproximately 5.5nm (10.2km) south of Entebbe Airport.

The authority adds that none of those on board is thought to have survived as the wreckage had not been located several hours ater the crash.

Registered S9-SAB, the Il-76 was being operated by Aerolift, on charter to Dynacorp at the time of the accident.

It was carrying a cargo of tents and water-purification equipment, bound for African Union peacekeeping troops deployed in Mogadishu.
