Middle Eastern carrier Emirates has requested permission to open a second regional French gateway after Nice, and operate a third daily flight to Paris.

Lyon St Exupery is the preferred choice for the additional regional destination, says a source familiar with the airline's plans.

"We met with the French civil aviation authority last week to discuss our request for additional traffic rights," he says.

"However, no decision will be taken before bilateral [air transport] talks between France and the United Arab Emirates are held in November."

Dubai-based Emirates is looking for another Paris Charles de Gaulle frequency, the source confirms.

"The last time we upgraded our French flight programme from France was in 2006," he says. "Our twice-daily Paris flights are full and there is scope to add a third."

Emirates operates to the French capital with Boeing 777-300 and Airbus A380 aircraft, while its daily service to Nice uses Airbus A330-200s.
