Middle Eastern carrier Emirates is to open a new African connection by starting flights to the Angolan capital Luanda this year.

Emirates is yet to confirm the new route but sources familiar with the plan indicate that it will begin in August and operate thrice-weekly with Airbus A330-200s.

The Dubai-based carrier says, however, that it is expecting to announce a "new development" in Africa shortly.

It adds that its market into the continent has shown 17% growth over the past year.
