Ethiopian Airlines will add Toronto to the list of destinations served by its new Boeing 787s, effective 9 November.

The carrier launched twice weekly flights to Toronto from its Addis Ababa hub on 16 July, initially serving the route with a 777-200LR.

"As the only direct flight between Toronto and Africa this route has created critical air connectivity between Africa and Canada," says chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam.

To date Ethiopian has received three of 10 787s ordered from Boeing, deploying the aircraft on a rotational basis across destinations in Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

Last week it also agreed to lease an additional three units from ILFC.

The carrier says it is pursuing additional frequencies on the Addis Ababa-Toronto route, which is limited by bilateral restrictions.
