Etihad Airways has significantly expanded its codeshare partnership with Jet Airways after regulatory approval was granted for inclusion of domestic routes operated by the latter in India.
This will increase the total number of codeshare routes from 28 to 71, between the two carriers.
Some 31 domestic routes operated by Jet form the bulk of the additional services. These comprise routes from the airline’s hubs in Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai to Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Goa, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mangalore, Patna, Trivandrum and Vadodara.
However, Jet will also place Etihad flight numbers on additional international services from Delhi and Mumbai to Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore, as well as from Chennai to Abu Dhabi and Singapore.
Etihad, on the other hand, will place Jet flight numbers on its services from Abu Dhabi to Dublin, Milan, Chicago and New York.
The codeshare expansion is a “milestone development” for both airlines, says Etihad chief executive James Hogan. “As one of the world’s fastest-growing travel markets, India has become increasingly important” to the Gulf carrier, he says.
Etihad holds a 24% stake in Jet.
