Etihad Airways has become the latest carrier to withdraw from the war-torn Syrian capital Damascus.

The airline says it has suspended flights between Abu Dhabi and Damascus with immediate effect until further notice.

"The decision, while not taken lightly, has been made due to the deteriorating security position in Syria," it says in a statement.

Royal Jordanian Airlines, Air France and Aeroflot are among the other carriers to suspend Syrian operations in recent weeks.
