The European Union has banned cargo flights between Europe and Syria operated by Syrian carriers.

The measure was imposed today following a meeting of European foreign ministers as part of a package of sanctions designed to pressure Syria's regime to end its brutal crackdown on its opponents.

Passenger flights will still operate between the EU and Syria so as not to complicate efforts to evacuate European citizens.
