Europe and America drive Lufthansa's August traffic

Lufthansa's airline group registered 3.4% growth in passenger numbers to 10.1 million in August 2013, while the number of flights fell 2.8% to 687,000.

The combined load factor for Lufthansa, Germanwings, Austrian Airlines and Swiss International Air Lines increased 1.6 percentage points to 85.4% compared with the same month last year. Overall capacity was hiked by 2.3%.

Lufthansa's passenger arm, including Germanwings and regional subsidiaries, recorded a 3.9% increase in the number of travelers to 7.3 million. Capacity was increased by 2.5% while sales increased 4.8%.

Load factor grew 1.9 percentage points to 84.7%.

Austrian's passenger numbers improved 1.9% to 1.1 million, with the load factor rising 0.7 percentage points to 86.1%. The Vienna-based carrier raised capacity by 1.7%, while traffic rose 2.5%.

Swiss' passenger numbers increased 2.4% to around 1.7 million, while the load factor was up 1.1 percentage points to 88.3%.

Overall, the group recorded the biggest traffic increases in Europe and the Americas, says Lufthansa.

However, the airline's cargo arm recorded a 1.3% decline in freight tonnage to 136,000t. While capacity increased 4.4%, sales fell by 1.7%. The load factor dropped correspondingly 1.8 percentage points to 66.5%.
