Expansion works have begun at Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) says.
The project involves the construction of a 310,000m2 terminal building, 77 aircraft parking stands, six de-icing stations, as well as a second runway that will be 3,600m (11,800ft) long and 60m wide, adds the CAAC.
Works will also be done to link the airport to the city centre by rail and expressways.
Zhengzhou is the capital of Henan province.
The expansion is scheduled to be completed by 2020, following which, the airport will have the capacity to handle 29 million passengers and 236,000 aircraft movements annually.
The airport is expecting its passenger throughput to hit 11.7 million in 2012.
