The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today approved a 40-year concession of the San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, paving the way for the first private concession of an airport in the USA under the agency's airport privatisation pilot programme.

The concession was won in July by Aerostar Airport Holdings, a joint venture between Mexico-based Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste's (ASUR) Cancun Airport subsidiary and Highstar Capital.

Aerostar now expects its Part 139 Operating Certificate concurrently with the closing of the 40-year lease, pending completion of certain closing steps by the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, says ASUR.

The FAA completed a 60-day public comment period on the concession on 19 November 2012 ahead of its ruling today.
