The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has created a new website for pilots and members of the public to report laser incidents involving aircraft and to obtain more information on the subject.
The website at http://www.faa.gov/aircraft/safety/report/laserinfo/ has links for reporting incidents, laser statistics and FAA research on the dangers that lasers can pose to aircraft.
Reports of laser incidents rose to 2,836 in 2010 from almost 300 in 2005. This year, 2,795 incidents were reported as of 20 October.
In June, the FAA announced civil penalties of up to $11,000 for pointing a laser into an aircraft cockpit. The agency is working on 18 such cases, it said.
