The US Federal Aviation Administration has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Australian Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism to research and develop alternative aviation fuels.

Under the pact the two countries will exchange information about policies, programmes, projects, research results and publications and also conduct joint studies in fuel sources and environmental impacts.

FAA stated the signing nations have agreed to cover the associated costs.

"Our ultimate goal is to work with all of the Asia Pacific nations to achieve a sustainable, independent energy future for aviation, and this is an exciting first step," said US Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
