ATR plans to keep the 70-seat ATR 72-500 in its portfolio for the coming years as works toward debuting the new -600 version in 2011.

The French turboprop manufacturer unveiled plans for a new 72 version in 2007 and is celebrating key wins from Brazil's Azul and Steven Udvar Hazy's new venture Air Lease at the show.

But ATR CEO Filippo Bagnato says there's no distinct point in the near future when the airframer plans to cease offering the 72-500.

Bagnato says some customers remain interested in the older version and ATR will "proceed to deliver aircraft they want".

The company says it will not offer the 72-500 forever, "but for the coming years we'll still propose ATR 72-500s".
