Sierra Nevada Corporation and ITT Exelis are teaming up to build the Vigilant Stare wide-area airborne persistent surveillance (WAPS) system capability, the companies announced on 9 July. The companies hope to offer the new surveillance suite as a fee-for-service solution to potential customers.

The Vigilant Stare system will provide visible and infrared imagery covering city-sized areas, the companies says. It can provide real-time motion imagery directly to multiple user groups. It is being marketed primarily to domestic customers, the companies say.

"This game-changing system will provide product in near real time for unprecedented, rapid exploitation and forensics analysis support," says Dave Bullock, vice president for persistent surveillance systems at Sierra Nevada. "The entire mission data set is available post-mission for live, long-term archiving, discovery and additional exploitation."

The new intelligence surveillance reconnaissance system will be hosted on a Viking DHC-6 Twin Otter twin-turboprop light transport.
