AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes wants to merge long-haul low-cost carrier AirAsia X with its more established short-haul sibling AirAsia.

A report in Hong Kong's South China Morning Post newspaper quotes Fernandes as saying "logically [AirAsia X and AirAsia] should be together but it has to be up to the board to decide".

In an email to ATI Fernandes says the suggestion of a merger "is my personal view."

AirAsia owns 16% of AirAsia X and has licensed its brand to the long-haul operator. AirAsia X's other shareholders include: Fernandes, Manara Consortium with 10%, Japan's Orix with 10% and the UK's Virgin Group 16%.
