Finnair technical staff have walked out after the airline decided to close most of its maintenance operations.

The flag carrier will outsource maintenance contracts for engine work and part of its component support requirements to SR Technics, the Zurich-based branch of Abu Dhabi's Mubadala MRO (maintenance, repair and operations) Network.

This will threaten the jobs of around 80% of the 350 employees in the respective areas at the engineering division, Finnair Technical Services.

The airline says that "some" of its maintenance personnel had walked out, but insisted flight operations would only suffer a "minimal impact".

The carrier added that it understood "very well what kind of emotions" its decision had caused among affected staff in the engine and component overhaul workshops.
