Munich airport's passenger numbers grew slightly during the first half of 2013, but aircraft movements and freight tonnage showed marked declines.
Passenger volume increased 0.3% - to 18.6 million travellers - compared with 2012's first half. Michael Kerkloh, chief executive of Germany's second-largest hub, says that the growth was "moderate", but still "remarkable" given Europe's economic difficulties.
For domestic flights, there was a decline of approximately 4%, to 4.6 million passengers, while the number of travellers to European destinations outside Germany grew 2% to about 11 million. For intercontinental services, there was a "slight" increase in passenger volume.
The number of aircraft movements fell 5.6% to around 187,000 as airlines cut capacity. Average load factor rose 0.8 percentage points to 74%.
Freight volume fell 2% to 134,000t.
But Munich airport says that the number of employees has grown 9.5%, to 32,250, since 2009.
