The parent company of Vilnius-based maintenance provider FL Technics, Avia Solutions Group, has started building two widebody hangars in Ulyanovsk, Russia and is considering a second Lithuanian facility in Kaunas.
Plans for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) operation at Ulyanovsk-Vostochny airport were already revealed a year ago, but Avia Solutions has now officially begun construction work.
The company wants to invest $22 million to build two hangars, each of which will have 8,000m² (86,100ft²) and be able to accommodate aircraft up to the size of the Airbus A380.
The facility will provide airframe maintenance up to D-check level, modifications, certain component support and interior refurbishment work for Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier and Sukhoi Superjet aircraft.
Up to 500 jobs will be created, with the first hangar due to open in early 2015, says Avia Solutions.
Avia Solutions has also revealed that it is planning to build a second Lithuanian MRO facility in Kaunas. Construction the 8,000m² hangar, which will be used for aircraft up to the Boeing 747, is to begin next year.
