Airliner net orders were negative in May for the second month in a row. There were 36 cancellations and only 28 orders leaving the monthly intake down by eight. That left the market for the first five months of the year with positive net orders of 90 for narrowbodies and 32 for turboprops; for the same period, while widebodies stood at minus 30 and regional jets at minus four.

The bulk of the cancellations in May came from China’s Hainan Airlines with 25 Embraer ERJ-145s. Ireland based Lease Corporation International placed orders for two Airbus A330s, Aerolinas Argentinas ordered one Boeing 737 while leasing company ILFC ordered one A330. In Asia, Japanese operator All Nippon Airways cancelled five Boeing 767s.
Boeing remind positive for the month as 20 fresh orders were offset by only six cancellations. Airbus received only three orders but suffered four cancellations. However, those numbers came before the orders stored up for announcement at the Paris Air Show in June.
Beside Hainan’s cancellations in the regional market, there were seven narrowbody cancellations, offset by 14 new orders and another four widebody cancellations set against an intake of nine new orders.
Overall, the order backlog for airliners ended May at 8,058, down 115 on the previous month.
Note: The analysis is on aircraft type basis and not on the end user application. For example, Boeing 737 figures might include BBJs. The Bombardier CRJ types are classified as part of the CRJ regional jet family.
