Delta Air Lines regional subsidiary Comair has appointed former Compass Airlines president John Bendoraitis as president.

Bendoraitis, a 25-year industry veteran, replaces John Selvaggio, who has decided to return to retirement, says Comair in a statement.

Prior to leading Compass, Bendoraitis served as VP of base maintenance for parent Northwest Airlines, overseeing the carrier's airframe, engine and component maintenance.

"John [Bendoraitis] is a strong, veteran leader with experience at both Northwest and Compass, giving him a unique perspective on both mainline and regional carriers," says Delta Connection senior VP Don Bornhorst.

"He has demonstrated his willingness to roll up his sleeves and immerse himself in the challenges facing everyone in the aviation industry. We are fortunate to have someone with his skills to lead Comair."

A former Delta executive who assumed Bornhorst's role as Comair president in October 2007, Selvaggio "sustained the airline's operational integrity and helped Comair maintain its role as a leader among regional airlines" during one of the most difficult years for the industry, says Bornhorst.
