Authorities say 49 people were killed as a result of the crash of a Colgan Air Bombardier Q400 in Buffalo, New York state late last night.
A spokeswoman for the state police says 48 people on board the aircraft were killed and a county official has told local news media that one person was killed on the ground.
Hospital officials in Buffalo have been quoted as saying there were no survivors from the crash. Pictures taken at the scene show the aircraft engulfed in flames.
The Colgan Air aircraft was on a commuter flight from Newark, New Jersey to Buffalo airport when it crashed at around 22:20hr last night.
While on its approach to Buffalo airport, the flight crew reported mechanical problems, say some of the news reports.
