Frankfurt airport has reported a 6.3% year-on-year decrease in passenger numbers to 3.98 million for December.
Freight tonnage fell 1.2% to 166,000t during the month and aircraft movements fell 10.2% to 34,400.
"The airline industry in Europe finds itself in a difficult economic situation," says Fraport executive board chairman Stefan Schulte.
"High fuel prices, the burden of the national aviation tax, and weak demand, particularly in Southern Europe, require capacity adjustments."
Airport owner Fraport's five majority-owned bases handled a total of 5.7 million passengers in December, down 1.8%.
Passenger numbers grew by 15.9% to 1.14 million at Lima airport, while Burgas airport saw a 45% fall to 13,100.
Antalya airport handled 559,000 passengers - down 0.5% in December - while footfall was flat at 18,600 at Varna airport.
