Frankfurt Airport recorded a 3.7% rise in passengers for the first quarter of 2011, despite a slight drop in March compared to the same month a year previously.

The airport handled 11.8 million passengers in the first quarter, together with 540,000 metric tonnes of freight (up 3.5%).

March saw a 0.9% fall in passenger numbers to 4.3 million, together with a 0.3% drop in freight.

Airport owner Fraport attributes the drop in March's passengers partly to the Easter holiday falling later this year and partly to instability in the Middle East, while the Japanese earthquake and tsunami had an adverse effect on freight levels.
