Frontier Airlines wants to add new seasonal flights between Rockford, Illinois, and the Mexican vacation destination of Puerto Vallarta.
Frontier requested approval from the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to serve the route in an application on 5 June.
The Denver-based carrier applied to operate weekly service beginning on or near 27 January 2014 using 138-seat Airbus A319 aircraft.
Frontier, a subsidiary of Indianapolis-based Republic Airways Holdings, already flies seasonally from Rockford to Cancun.
Rockford is about 129km (80 miles) from Chicago.
Frontier also flies seasonally to Puerto Vallarta from Chicago O'Hare International airport, Kansas City and Denver.
The carrier has increased flying in recent years to Mexico from cities outside its Denver hub, including Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and St. Louis.
