Fuel system failure caused RAAF PC-9 crash

The failure of a fuel system component caused the 18 May crash of a Royal Australian Air Force Pilatus PC-9/A. The fleet remains grounded pending investigations into the incident.

The failure in the component resulted in the loss of engine power, said Australia's Department of Defence. It has ruled out other causes for the accident.

The RAAF is working with maintenance contractors and engine-maker Pratt & Whitney Canada, whose PT6A-62 engine powers the Pilatus, to determine the cause of the failure. Only after this has been fully identified and remedied will the PC-9 be cleared for flight operations.

The two crew members involved in the incident both survived and have been released from hospital, said the DoD.
